Most travelers spend ₩90,000–₩250,000 per person per day in Korea, excluding international flights. A mid-range week in Seoul usually lands around ₩900,000–₩1,100,000 per person, or roughly $650–$800 depending on exchange rates. Your final budget depends mostly on two things: where you sleep and how often you take taxis.
Korea can be surprisingly affordable if you eat local food, use the subway and avoid peak hotel dates. It can also get expensive fast if you stay in central hotels, take late-night taxis and shop hard at Olive Young or fashion stores.
Here is a realistic daily budget by travel style.
Style | Per person / day | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
Backpacker | ₩85,000–₩110,000 | Hostel, kimbap shops, street food, subway only |
Mid-range | ₩130,000–₩160,000 | Shared 3-star hotel, cafés, BBQ once or twice |
Comfort | ₩220,000–₩280,000 | 4-star hotel, nicer restaurants, some taxis |
Luxury | ₩450,000+ | 5-star hotel, fine dining, private tours |
As a simple example, a couple spending 7 days in Seoul at a mid-range level should expect around ₩2,000,000 total excluding flights. That covers one hotel room, meals out, cafés, transit, a few attractions and some light shopping.
Where does the money actually go?
Accommodation is the biggest swing factor.
A hostel bed can be around ₩30,000. A decent 3-star double room often lands around ₩90,000–₩130,000. During cherry blossom season and fall foliage season, the same room can jump noticeably, so booking early matters.
Food is the easy part. Korea is generous to budget travelers.
A local meal often costs ₩9,000–₩12,000. Convenience-store breakfast can stay under ₩5,000. Korean BBQ with drinks is more like ₩25,000–₩40,000 per person.
Transport is cheap if you use the subway. A Seoul subway ride with a transport card starts around ₩1,550, and most travelers can move around the city on ₩8,000–₩10,000 per day. The bigger transport cost is intercity travel: a Seoul–Busan KTX round trip is roughly ₩120,000 in standard class.

What quietly inflates a Korea budget?
Late-night taxis
The subway shuts down around midnight, and taxi fares rise late at night. If you go out in Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam or Seongsu, budget for the ride home.
Peak-season hotels
Late March to April and October to early November are beautiful, but hotel prices climb. Moving your trip by even one or two weeks can save more than cutting food costs.
Shopping
Skincare, fashion, K-pop goods and convenience-store snacks add up fast. Set a shopping number before the trip, not after you enter Olive Young.
Western food
Local Korean meals are good value. Western brunch, hotel breakfast and imported food are where the budget starts leaking.
Before you book
If you are trying to keep costs low
Stay near a subway station, eat mostly local food and avoid taxis. Korea is very manageable on ₩90,000–₩120,000 per day if your accommodation is controlled.
If you want a comfortable first trip
Plan around ₩150,000–₩250,000 per person per day. That gives you better hotels, cafés, BBQ, attractions and occasional taxis without feeling restricted.
If you are visiting Seoul and Busan
Add at least ₩120,000 for a Seoul–Busan KTX round trip. Add more if you plan to use taxis in both cities.
If you are coming during cherry blossom season
Book accommodation early. This is one of the easiest ways to avoid overpaying in Korea.
If you are a heavy shopper
Separate your shopping budget from your travel budget. Korea can be affordable day to day, but skincare, fashion and souvenirs can double your spend quickly.
