Use Naver Map as your main map app in Korea, with Kakao Map as backup. Google Maps works for basic place search, but it can still be weaker for walking routes, local directions and real-time transit inside Korea. Naver Map and Kakao Map have English interfaces, better Korean place data, and more reliable subway, bus and walking directions.
Most travelers arrive in Korea, open Google Maps, and quickly notice something feels off. Places appear, but routes can be weaker than expected. Walking directions may feel strange, and local search often misses small restaurants or cafés.
The fix is simple: install Naver Map before your trip. If one app fails to find a place, check Kakao Map.
Why does Google Maps struggle in Korea?
For years, Korea restricted the export of high-precision map data for national-security reasons. That made Google Maps less useful in Korea than in many other countries.
In 2026, Korea conditionally approved Google’s request to use more detailed map data, so Google Maps may improve. But for travelers right now, the practical advice has not changed much: use Korean map apps first.
Naver and Kakao have the local data, transit feeds, station exits, bus stops, restaurant listings and Korean search behavior that visitors actually need.
Which app should you use?
App | Best for |
|---|---|
Naver Map | Best default for foreigners, transit, walking, restaurants |
Kakao Map | Good backup, strong local search, cafés and small places |
Google Maps | Saving pins, rough orientation, international familiarity |
Apple Maps | Backup only |
If you only want one app, choose Naver Map. If you want the safest setup, install both Naver Map and Kakao Map.
How do you search like a local?
The biggest mistake is typing English romanizations.
Instead, copy and paste the Korean name.
For example, search:
성수동 카페
광장시장
강남역 11번출구
the restaurant’s Korean name from Instagram, Naver, or a blog
If a place has many branches, add the neighborhood. “Cafe Layered” may be vague. “Cafe Layered Bukchon” or the Korean branch name works better.
What does Naver Map do well?
Naver Map is especially useful for:
subway routes
bus arrival times
walking directions
station exits
restaurant search
saved places
reviews and opening hours
driving and taxi destination checks
For Seoul subway stations, exit numbers matter. If your restaurant says “5 minutes from Exit 3,” Naver Map is much better at getting you to the right exit.

Before you navigate
Download Naver Map before arrival
Set the language to English and test a few searches before your trip.
Copy Korean names
Korean text searches work better than romanized English names.
Use station exits
In Seoul, the right subway exit can save 10–15 minutes of walking.
Keep Google Maps for saved places
Google Maps is still useful for planning and saving pins, but check the final route in Naver Map or Kakao Map.
Install Kakao Map as backup
Sometimes one app finds a restaurant or café better than the other. Having both prevents wasted time.
